- John Samuel Martin was born on 8 April 1815. He married Martha Ann Staples in Albemarle County, Virginia on 3 November 1840. They resided at "Fairview" near Scottsville, where he was a merchant in the firm Staples, Martin and Company, and later owned and operated a woolen mill. Martin and his wife had eight children, including United States Senator Thomas Staples Martin (1847-1919). He died on 2 August 1867.
