- Letter, 2 May 1863, from Lieutenant George H. Sterling (d. 1865), serving with the 52nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment in Beaufort, South Carolina, to his brother Arthur at Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In it, Sterling describes his new position as adjutant of the regiment, offers brotherly advice on school and friendship, and states his determination to see the Confederate states return to the Union. A second letter, 11 January 1865, gives the news of Lieutenant Sterling's death from typhus while on leave in Pennsylvania, 10 January 1865. Also included are copies of muster rolls, 1861-1865, reflecting his service with the 52nd Pennsylvania, and of a 19 May 1789 lawsuit that Sterling took from the Warwick County Courthouse

- George H. Sterling, of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, served with the 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He entered as a private in 1861, then rose to the rank of sergeant major, 14 November 1862, and finally first lieutenant and adjutant, 19 May 1863. While on leave in December 1864, Sterling contracted typhus and died on 10 January 1865.
