- William M. Shands was born 6 September 1861. He was the son of Gen. William Briggs Shands and Letitia Christian Tyler. He married Annie Bynum Ridley (1877-1968) on 6 November 1895, and died on 15 March 1922. Their daughter Bessie Thomas Shands was born 20 May 1900. She was an assistant to the Clerk of the Court of Southampton County, Virginia for over 50 years. She died on 29 July 1992.
