Of special interest are his letters to Joseph Chinn, his nephew who managed his Northern Neck estate, which outline Ball's instructions concerning the care and discipline of slaves and the management of the plantation

- Ball was the stepbrother of Mary Ball, mother of George Washington. He spent the latter part of his life in England.
