- Biographical or historical data
- John Minor Botts was born 16 September 1802 at Dumfries, Virginia, to Benjamin Gaines Botts (1776-1811) and Jane Tyler Botts (1782-1811). Both of his parents died in the Richmond Theater fire of 26 December 1811, and John Minor and the other children were raised by relatives living in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Botts read the law and was admitted to the bar in 1820. He began his practice in Richmond and moved to Henrico County, Virginia. Botts represented Henrico County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1831 to 1839, then was elected to the United States House of Representatives where he served from 1839 to 1843. Botts lost his reelection bid in 1843, but was reelected in 1847, serving until 1849. He represented Richmond city and Charles City, Henrico, and New Kent Counties, Virginia, in the Virginia constitutional convention of 1850-1851. Botts was an ardent Unionist during the Civil War, believing that secession had been a mistake. This led to his arrest by the Confederate government and a month long stay in prison, and four months of house arrest in Richmond. After his release, Botts moved to a farm in Culpeper County, Virginia, where he died 8 January 1869. Botts was buried in Shockoe Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Botts married Mary Whiting Blair (ca. 1802-1841) either 13 or 14 May 1822, and they had seven children.
