- Military commission, 2 June 1851, for James W. Graves of Orange County, Virginia, as major of the 3rd Regiment, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Virginia militia. Commission was signed by Governor John B. Floyd. Graves qualified for his commission on 1 September 1851

- James W. Graves was a prominent citizen of Orange County, Virginia, and very active in the county militia. He married Sarah Jane Graves (d. ca. 1878) and they had children. Graves died between 29 September 1856, when he wrote his will, and 24 November 1856, when it was proved in the Orange County Court.
