- Letter, 9 May 1854, from Nathan Payne (b. ca. 1801) of Boyd's Tavern, Albemarle County, Virginia, to his son Archibald M. Payne (b. ca. 1828) of San Francisco, California. In it, the elder Payne encouraged his son to pursue financial success; looked forward to the construction of a Pacific railroad; gave updates of two other sons working at a steam saw mill in North Carolina; and prodded Archibald to think of marrying after seeking his fortune

- Nathan Payne (b. ca. 1801) was born in Goochland County, Virginia. He and his wife, June, may have lived in Fluvanna County, Virginia, early in their marriage, but eventually settled in Albemarle County. They are known to have had at least six children. Son Archibald (b. ca. 1828) moved to San Francisco sometime between 1850 and 1854.
