- Alfred Hart Miles was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on 2 November 1883, the son of Lieutenant Charles R. Miles, United States Navy. While a midshipman at the Naval Academy, Miles collaborated with Lieutenant Charles Zimmerman, bandmaster of the Naval Academy Band, to write "Anchors Aweigh," which was adopted as the school's fight song. He graduated from the Academy in 1907 and married Elizabeth Gilmer Tyler (1885-1976) later that year. The couple had a son, Lion Tyler Miles (1910-1942), a navy lieutenant who was presumed killed when his ship, the USS Asheville, was sunk by Japanese forces on 3 March 1942. Alfred Miles, who had retired from the Navy as a captain, died on 6 October 1956 in Norfolk, Virginia.
