- William Ham was appointed a second mate aboard the revenue cutter Virginia in 1791. In 1795, he was promoted to first mate. Ham was appointed master of a cutter in 1804. During the War of 1812, Ham captained the cutter Jefferson and saw action. He may be the same William Ham who died in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, in early 1826.
