- Accawmack County, the original name of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, was changed to Northampton County in 1643. In 1663, Northampton County was divided into two counties, the lower retaining the name Northampton, the upper resuming the name Accomack County. The parish of the latter became Accomack Parish, which it probably had been before 1643.
