- Letter, 3 July 1864, written by Henry Augustus Eaton (1838-1864), while serving with the 17th Vermont Infantry near Petersburg, to his mother Sarah Eaton in Champaign County, Illinois. Eaton writes about shipments of mail and supplies, troop rations, his duties in the commissary department and as an aide-de-camp to Gen. Simon G. Griffin (1824-1902), the organization of his brigade and duties of the various regiments, and he describes going into the trenches around Petersburg, and the anticipation of battle in the coming days

- Henry Augustus Eaton was born in Granville, Vermont on 8 November 1838. He graduated at Middlebury College in 1862. He enlisted for nine months in Company A, 16th Vermont Volunteers, and was the unanimous choice of his company for captain. At the expiration of his service, he worked in Bethel, Vermont to raise a company for three years' service in the Seventeenth Vermont regiment, and was again elected captain. Captain Eaton had been detached from his command to serve as commissary, and afterwards as aide-de-camp on Gen. Griffin's staff. At his own request he was relieved to return to this regiment, of which he had command during the absence of the wounded colonel. He was killed at the Battle of Poplar Grove Church on 30 September 1864.
