He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College with the highest honors in 1829 and from Union Theological Seminary in 1834. Smith travelled to Europe and studied at the Universities of Halle and Berlin. Returning to Virginia, he became a pastor of a Presbyterian congregation in Danville, then held pastorates at Tinkling Springs, Waynesboro, and Staunton. He was a founder of the Augusta Female Seminary (now Mary Baldwin College) and later served as the first superintendent of the Prince Edward County schools from 1870 to 1882. In 1854, Smith joined the faculty of the Union Theological Seminary, then still part of Hampden-Sydney College and taught until his retirement in 1889. He maintained close ties with Hampden-Sidney's library until his death. Smith married Mary Moore Morrison 31 October 1839, and they had six children who survived to adulthood. Smith died at his daughter's home in Petersburg, Virginia, 14 March 1893.
