- Papers, 1854-1891, of the Garland Family of Virginia, Missouri, and Delaware, consisting of a letter, dated 19 May 1891, from the author Thomas Nelson Page (1853-1922) of Richmond, Virginia, to Spotswood Garland of Wilmington, Delaware, concerning a copy of a "Treatise on Slavery" by Garland's father, Hugh A. Garland (1805-1854), and encouraging Garland to deposit it in the Virginia Historical Society; a letter, dated 1 December 1891, from Page to Garland again concerning the "Treatise on Slavery;" the manuscript of Hugh A. Garland's "Treatise on Slavery;" and a typescript copy of the "Treatise."

- Hugh A. Garland (1805-1854) was born in Nelson County, Virginia. He represented Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in the House of Delegates from 1833 to 1838. He later served as clerk of the United States House of Representatives from 1838 to 1841. A writer as well as a lawyer, Garland wrote a two volume biography of John Randolph of Roanoke which was published in 1850. Garland moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1845 and died there 14 October 1854. His son, Spotswood Garland, eventually moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where he died in 1925.
