- Biographical or historical data
- John Floyd was born 24 April 1783 in Jefferson County, Virginia. He attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1806. Floyd was a major in the Virginia Militia from 1807 to 1812, and surgeon in the Virginia line in 1812. He was appointed brigadier-general of the militia in 1812. He served in the House of Delegates from 1814 to 1815, and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1817, serving until 1829. In 1830, Floyd was elected governor of Virginia. Floyd left office at the completion of his term in 1834. Floyd received South Carolina's 11 electoral votes in the 1832 presidential election. He married Letitia Preston (1779-1852) 13 May 1804, and they had twelve children. Floyd died 15 August 1837 in Monroe County, Virginia.
