- Daybook and general memorandum book, 1865 August-1866 August, of C. W. Murdaugh, a lawyer in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. The daybook was used primarily to record the various services and suits that Murdaugh presented at court. Examples of services include serving as administrator and guardian, drafting deeds, taking depositions, settling estates, and arguing cases at court. Each entry lists the style of the suit with court costs and notes the amounts of money owed and paid by his client

- C. W. Murdaugh was the son of James Murdaugh (1799-1871) of Portsmouth, Virginia, and a lawyer, judge, and politician. He attended William and Mary and the University of Virginia where he received his law degree. He was a member of the House of Delegates from 1855 to 1856 and was the Commonwealth's attorney for the city of Portsmouth 1878. In 1882 he was elected as Judge of the Court of Hustings, serving until 1889. After his retirement from the bench he copartnered in the firm of Murdaugh and Marshall.
