- Alexander James was born 8 November 1817 in Mathews County, Virginia, to Thomas James and Frances Lewis James. He was appointed an officer in the 61st Regiment of the Virginia militia in 1839. James was a successful mariner in Mathews County. He married Harriet Miller (1822-1899) 18 November 1841. Alexander James drowned with his oldest son Thomas B. James (1842-1867) 7 December 1867.
