- Letter, 27 April 1852, from Colonel R. P. Cook (1813-1889) of New Kent County, Virginia, to Colonel G. W. Chaney (d. 1855) of Charles City County, Virginia, informing Chaney that he is unwell and will probably be unable to attend the muster of the 52nd Virginia militia, and since he will be unable to attend, Chaney must take command of the drill. Cook includes a roster of the officers of the regiment. The 52nd Virginia militia consisted of men from both Charles City and New Kent Counties

- Richard Pye Cook was born 10 October 1813 at North Green in New Kent County, Virginia, to William Cook (d. 1831) and Rebecca Hayes Cook (d. 1826). Richard Cook attended the College of William and Mary, and returned to New Kent County to become a planter, eventually buying Chestnut Grove, the former Dandridge home where Martha Washington was born. Cook was commissioned an ensign in the 52nd Virginia Militia Regiment in 1833 and rose through the ranks until being commissioned a colonel in 1851. Cook held several minor posts in New Kent County including magistrate and inspector of weights and measures. He married Sarah Ann Eliza Chandler (1814-1879) 22 November 1836 and they had six children. Cooke died in December 1889 and was buried at Chapel Church.
