- Papers, 2004 and n.d., consisting of an undated citation of William Webb Patterson (1924- ) from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal (1892-1949), and a 25 July 2004 newspaper feature on Patterson's life and World War II service as a Navy pilot with Torpedo Squadron Nine, attached to the U.S.S. Yorktown. The citation accompanied Patterson's receipt of the Navy Cross, given "for extraordinary heroism...in action against major units of the Japanese Fleet off Kyushu, Japan, April 7, 1945."

- William Webb Patterson (1924- ) was raised in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating from Maury High School in 1942, he enrolled in the Navy's Aviation Cadet Program. At age nineteen, he became a commissioned officer in the Navy. He then spent three years in the Pacific theater in World War II as a pilot with Torpedo Squadron Nine, attached to the U.S.S. Yorktown. As a lieutenant, junior grade, he landed a direct hit on the Japanese cruiser Yahagi against heavy antiaircraft fire on 7 April 1945, and was subsequently honored with the Navy Cross. Other honors include the Distinguished Flying Cross, four air medals, and two presidential unit citations. After the war, Patterson was part of the Navy reserves until 1954. He attended Virginia Tech and worked as a civil engineer. With first wife Agnes Campbell Patterson (1932-1984), he had five children. The couple settled in Suffolk, where William Patterson remained after her death. He later remarried, to Mary Lydens Patterson (1932-2001).
