- Letter, 11 May 1825, written by John Rogers Cooke (1788-1854) of Winchester, Virginia to Philip Clayton Pendleton (1779-1863) of Martinsburg, (West) Virginia. Much of the letter concerns financial matters and Pendleton acting as security on a note. Cooke adds a postscript regarding an upcoming political meeting in advance of the convention in Staunton to discuss reform in representation in the Virginia House of Delegates

- John Rogers Cooke was born in Bermuda on 17 June 1788. He was the son of Dr. Stephen Cooke and Catherine Esten. He accompanied his parents to Alexandria in 1791, and then later moved to Leesburg. During the Chesapeake Affair in 1807 he held a commission, and in 1812 participated in the defense of the coast of Virginia. After studying law he was admitted to the bar and began his practice in Martinsburg, (West) Virginia. Cooke represented Berkeley County in the Virginia House of Delegates (1813-1814). He married Maria Pendleton on 18 November 1813. They moved to Winchester, Virginia where he continued to practice law. Cooke represented Frederick and Jefferson Counties in the Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830. In 1840, he moved to Richmond. He died on 15 December 1854.
