- Biographical or historical data
- James Bruce was born about 1720 in Scotland to John Bruce (ca. 1690-1748) and his wife. James Bruce moved to Pennsylvania, then to what became Frederick County, Virginia. He operated a grist mill and a saw mill in Frederick County, before moving to western Pennsylvania (part of which was then considered Virginia) after 1763. By 1792 he and his family were living in Nelson County, Kentucky and Bruce was apparently still alive in 1800. He married Margaret McMahon about 1744, and they had at least four children.
