- Biographical or historical data
- Martin Key was born on 16 October 1780 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was the son of Tandy Key and Mildred Perkins. He married Judith Perkins (1787-1841) of Buckingham County. Key served in the 91st Virginia militia during the War of 1812 and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. He was later employed with the Kanawha Salt Works. The family moved to Rutherford County and later Madison County, Tennessee. He died there on 17 December 1857.
