- The development of the Dept. of State Police began in 1922 with the appointment of eight license inspectors. Their main duties were the enforcement of the license laws. In 1924, the inspectors were transferred to the Division of Motor Vehicles. Then, in 1932, the inspectors were granted the power of a sheriff to enforce all criminal laws. The Dept. was separared from the Division of Motor Vehicles in 1942 and was made into an independent agency. The Superintendent reports directly to the Governor, overseeing the operation of seven divisions and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Major responsibilities include the patrolling of Virginia's highways, investigation of criminal activity, training of law enforcement officers, and the collection, maintenance and dissemination of statistical law enforcement information.
