- William Cabell Rives was born 4 May 1793 at "Union Hill" in Amherst County, Virginia, to Robert Rives (1764-1845) and Margaret Jordan Cabell Rives (ca. 1770-1815). He attended Hampden-Sidney College in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1809. After studying law under Thomas Jefferson, he was admitted to the bar in 1814 and began practicing in Nelson County, Virginia. Rives represented Nelson County in the House of Delegates from 1817 to 1820, then moved to Albemarle County in 1821. After representing Albemarle County in the House of Delegates from 1822 to 1823, Rives was elected to the United States Congress in 1823. In 1829, he resigned to become Minister to France, serving until 1832. Rives served in the United States Senate from 1832 to 1834 and 1836 to 1845. He again served as Minister to France from 1849 to 1853. A member of the Peace Conference of 1861, Rives served in the Confederate Provisional Congress in 1861 and in the Confederate House of Representatives from 1864 to 1865. He married Judith Page Walker (1802-1882) of Albemarle County, Virginia, 24 March 1819 and they had 5 children. Rives died 25 April 1868 at his home "Castle Hill" in Albemarle County and is buried in the Rives family plot.
