- Commission, 2 July 1719, for George Mason (1690-1735) as county lieutenant for Stafford County, Virginia, and command of its militia, from Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740), lieutenant governor of Virginia. - George Mason was born in 1690 in Stafford County, Virginia, to George Mason (1660-1716) and Mary Fowke Mason. Mason inherited his father's property and increased his land holdings in both Virginia and Maryland. He grew tobacco and rented his property out to tenants. Mason served as sheriff of Stafford County, and was appointed county lieutenant by Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740), giving him command of the county militia and the rank of colonel. Mason was a member of the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe which Spotswood organized to explore into the Shenandoah Valley. He served in the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1715 to 1726, representing Stafford County. Mason married Ann Thomson (d. 1762) in 1721, and they had 3 children, including George Mason (1725-1792) who wrote the Virginia Bill of Rights in 1776. Mason drowned in a boating accident on the Potomac River 5 March 1735.
