- Biographical or historical data
- Francis Walker Gilmer was born at Penn Park, Albemarle County, Virginia, on October 9, 1790. Graduate of the College of William and Mary (1810), studied law with William Wirt (1811-1814), practiced law in Winchester, Virginia (1815-1817), appointed professor of law at the University of Virginia. Died before assuming office on February 25, 1826.
