- John Ballenger was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1759. He enlisted in the Continental Army on 16 January 1777 and became part of John Gillison's company, designated the 2nd Company of the 10th Virginia Regiment. The 10th regiment was later designated as the 6th Virginia Regiment. In 1779, Ballenger was attached to a regiment of Light Infantry commanded by General Anthony Wayne. After the war, Ballenger moved to South Carolina and later Alabama.
