Biographical or historical data
Robert Baylor Semple was born 20 January 1769 in Gloucester County, Virginia, to John Semple and Elizabeth Walker Semple. He became a student at Peter Nelson's school and at age 16 became an assistant teacher. He later tutored for a private family and studied law. Semple joined the Baptist church and was baptized in December 1789 and was ordained a minister 26 September 1790. Soon after, he was called as minister to Bruington church in King and Queen County, Virginia, where he served until his death. Semple married Ann Loury 1 March 1793 and they had 12 children, only 4 of whom outlived their father. Semple settled his family on a farm called "Nordington," where he operated a school. He served as president of the Baptist General Association of Virginia in 1813, trustee of Columbian College in 1811, moderator of the General Meeting of Correspondence in 1807, first president of the the Baptist General Association of Virginia in 1823, and as president of the Triennal Convention from 1820 until his death. Semple received a D.D. from Brown University in 1814 and an honorary A. M. from there in 1815. Semple died 25 December 1831 and was buried in the Bruington cemetery.
