- Letter, dated 18 August 1860, from Governor John Letcher (1813-1884) to William Rust Baskerville (1798-1884) of Lombardy Grove in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, concerning Letcher's refusal to reappoint a "Colonel McDearman" to an office. The reference may be to Colonel Samuel D. McDearman (ca. 1815-1871) who was inspector of tobacco at Shockoe warehouse and who was not reappointed to that position by Letcher

- John Letcher was born in Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia, March 29, 1813. He attended private rural schools and Randolph-Macon College, and graduated from Washington Academy in Lexington in 1833. Letcher studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1839. He practiced law in Lexington and edited the Lexington Valley Star from 1840 to 1850. Letcher served as a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1850, then was elected as a Democrat to Congress, serving from 1851 to 1859. Elected governor of Virginia to serve from 1860 to 1864, Letcher attempted to help prevent the outbreak of the Civil War, but supported the passage of the Virginia Ordinance of Secession. When his term ended, he returned to Lexington and resumed his law practice. Letcher was a member of the House of Delegates in 1875-1877. He was a member of the board of visitors of the Virginia Military Institute from 1866 to 1880, and served as president of the board for ten years. Letcher married Mary Susan Holt 14 May 1843 and they had 11 children. Letcher died 26 January 1884 and was buried in the the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lexington.
