- Journal and diary, 1824-1831, including memoirs (36 pages), accounts, (p. 36-109), and an obituary of Nathaniel C. Claiborne (p. 70). The accounts cover the period from 1824 to 1831. The memoirs, arranged in inverted order, were written for Claiborne's children, and include information on family history, his education, and his personal, political, and moral beliefs

- Nathaniel Herbert Claiborne, the brother of William Charles Cole Claiborne and uncle of John Francis Hamtramck Claiborne, was born in Sussex County, Virginia on 1 Februray 1775. He attended a local academy and became engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1810-1812), the Virginia State Senate (1821-1825), and the U. S. House of Representatives (1825-1837). He was defeated for re-election in 1836 and resumed his agricultural endeavors. On 15 August 1859, Claiborne died at his Claibrook estate near Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia and was buried in the family cemetery.
