- Papers, 1861-1862, of James R. Rowland (b. ca. 1820) of Charles City County, Virginia, consisting of commission, dated 29 May 1861, of James R. Rowland as 1st lieutenant of the 52nd regiment, 2nd brigade, 4th division, of the Virginia militia, by Governor John Letcher (1813-1884) and endorsed by John Armistead Selden (b. 1802), justice of the peace of Charles City County, stating that Rowland has qualified; special order, dated 21 January 1862, by Major Lewis through Jordan C. Parkinson (ca. 1840-1890), adjutant; and honorable discharge, dated 9 May 1862, of 1st lieutenant Rowland by order of General John B. Magruder (1807-1871)

- Born in New Jersey about 1820, James R. Rowland relocated to Charles City County, Virginia, with his wife Hannah (b. ca. 1821) and three children, to continue his trade as a carpenter. In 1861, he received a commission as 1st lieutenant in the Virginia militia. After a year of service, he was honorably discharged because there were not enough men to make up a company. Rowland died sometime after 1878.
