- Letter, 7 February 1846, from James M. Smith (b. ca. 1800) in the Senate Chamber of the Virginia Capital Building to John R. Stith (1821-1850), Clerk of County and Circuit Court, in Northumberland County. The letter primarily concerns the purchase of two books and the ongoings at the present session of the General Assembly
- Biographical or historical data
- James M. Smith of Northumberland County, Virginia was born circa 1800. He farmed land in Heathsville and was elected to the Virginia General Assembly from Northumberland County in 1840. He served in the House of Delegates from 1840-1842 and in the Senate from 1845-1849. Smith also became a member of the Heathsville Division No. 163 of the Sons of Temperance in 1848.
- John Randolph Stith (1821-1850) of Northumberland County served in Northumberland as Clerk of County and Circuit Courts from 1846-1850. He married Caroline Homoiselle Stuart of King George County in June 1846. They had no children. Stith died of pneumonia in 1850. Like James M. Smith, Stith became a member of the Heathsville Division No. 163 of the Sons of Temperance in 1850.
