- Letters, 1917-1918, exchanged between Clarence Winford Windle (1887-1963) of Lebanon Church, Shenandoah County, Virginia and his wife Stella May (Bowers) Windle (1887-1963). All but three letters are from Clarence, who was enlisted in the Headquarters Company, Regiment 318, 80th United States Army stationed at Camp Lee in Petersburg, Virginia. - Clarence Winford Windle was born in Lebanon Church, Shenandoah County, Virginia, 9 December 1887 to William L. and Julia L. Windle. He married Stella May Bowers (1885-1958) in Strasburg, Virginia on 18 June 1913. He worked as a mechanic for his father W.L. Windle until he enlisted in the Army at Woodstock, Virginia on 19 Sept. 1917. The Army assigned Windle to Headquarters Company, Regiment 318, 80th United States Army stationed at Camp Lee in Petersburg, Virginia. He served there from his enlist date until 20 May 1918. Sometime in March 1918 he earned promotion to Private, Mechanic rank. On 22 May 1918, Windle embarked from Hoboken, New Jersey on the ship "Leviathan" and arrived in France one week later. He first saw battle action during the Meuse Argonne Offensive from 31 Oct. 1918 to 1 Nov. 1918. Windle returned to the United States in May 1919 and was discharged from service 5 June 1919. After the war he continued to labor as a mechanic. He died 11 December 1962 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia.
