- Letter, 5 October 1816, written by James Johnson (ca. 1754-1845) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, to Col. John Cowper Cohoon, Sr. (1763-1823), sheriff of Nansemond County, requesting, on behalf of his client, money that was collected in fulfillment of a writ of execution in the suit Darden's executors vs. Baker, heard in Nansemond County Court. Johnson also provides Cohoon with a receipt

- James Johnson graduated from The College of William and Mary, and was admitted to the bar and practiced in Williamsburg. He was a delegate to the state Constitutional Convention in 1788, and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, 1797-1804, 1806, 1807, and 1809-1813. Johnson moved to Isle of Wight County in 1807, and continued to practice law. He was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives, and served from 4 March 1813 to 1 February 1820. He then served as Collector of Customs at Norfolk.
