- Letter, 19 June 1864, written by Charles H. Shapley (1838-1888) to his sister Alvira A. Shapley (b. ca. 1848) in Cortland County, New York while he was serving with the 1st New York Light Artillery during the Civil War. The letter was written near Petersburg. Subjects include the movement of his unit, skirmishes, a description of the city, having his photograph taken, and the impeding hanging of an African-American

- Charles H. Shapley was a resident of Cortland, New York when he enlisted in the 1st New York Light Artillery in 1861. He was later promoted to corporal, and was wounded at the Battle of Winchester. Following the war, he resided in Auburn, and was employed as a pattern maker, and in scroll sawing and jobbing work, and later steam heaters. He died in Indianapolis in 1888 while he was there on business, and his remains were returned to New York and buried in Cortland Cemetery.
