- James Ira Wood was born 16 July 1894 in Clintondale, New York to James Daniel Wood (d. 1904) and Mary Matilda Rhodes Wood (d. 1934). Wood received his bachelor's degree from Temple University. Wood received a teaching position at Corinth Academy, a Quaker school in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1913. He became principal at Grange Hall School in Chesterfield County, Virginia, in 1922. Wood also served as a justice of the peace in Chesterfield County. Wood earned a master's degree in Science Education from the University of Richmond in 1941. Wood moved to Petersburg High School in 1941 to head up its manual training department. Wood married Elma Gladys Meredith (1906-1983) 27 May 1926 and they had three children. Wood died of pneumonia 5 April 1942 in Petersburg General Hospital and was buried at Skinquarter Baptist Church cemetery in Chesterfield County.
