- Philip St. George Cocke was born 17 April 1809 at "Bremo Bluff" in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He graduated from West Point in 1832 and served two years in the military before resigning to manage his plantations in Virginia and Mississippi. A proponent of progressive farming, Cocke served as president of the Virginia Agricultural Society and contributed articles to several agricultural journals. He served on the board of visitors for the Virginia Military Academy. When Virginia seceded from the Union, Cocke was appointed a brigadier-general of state troops. When these troops transferred to the Confederate army, Cocke received a commission as a colonel, then promoted to brigadier-general 21 October 1861. He commanded troops during the 1st battle of Manassas (Bull Run). After eight months service, Cocke retired, his health ruined. Cocke returned to his plantation "Belmead" in Powhatan County, Virginia, and committed suicide 26 December 1861. Buried on his estate, Cocke was reinterred in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, in 1904.
